Mystic Flag Committee Meetings

Annual Meeting Minutes
June 14, 2017

The meeting was called to order by Executive Committee Vice President Robert Cushman who was standing in for President John Kennedy.

Father Anthony C. Dinoto, Rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church in Niantic offered the Invocation.

Minutes from the last Annual Meeting held on June 14, 2016 were distributed as part of the day's agenda. There being no corrections, the minutes were accepted as presented.

Treasurer Herbert Holmstedt distributed the Annual Treasurer's Report for the period June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017 which are included as part of these minutes. The report was approved as presented.

Among the attendees receiving special recognition were First Selectman and Executive Committee member Rob Simmons; long time former Mystic Seaport representative and Committee supporter, Dana Hewson; Katie Bradford and Sue Piver of Custom Canvas and Stephen Bessette.

Bob Cushman recognized Boy Scout Troop #76, commended them for their ongoing efforts placing the 110 street flags as well as raising the ceremonial flag and presented them with a check for $600. Acting Scout Master Rob Bunger reported current Troop strength at 34 registered scouts. He reported that over 50 scouts from Troup #76 have attained the rank of Eagle Scout over the years.

Bob Cushman presented the president's report by recounting the long history of the Mystic Flag Committee beginning with its first president, Bill Herman. He provided many anecdotes from past years including the tradition of flying flags of other countries on special occasions. This practice began by flying the French flag on Bastille Day with the encouragement of Dorothy and Loring Baily Jr. as a way of welcoming visitors from other countries. The history of the Club's gavel provided an interesting segue for the installation of officers for the upcoming year.

Flag Captain Richard Dussault acknowledged the performance and assistance of Boy Scout Troop #76. He reported on the favorable inspection of the pole base following several accidents involving collisions with motor vehicles. No structural problems were identified. He recognized Jack Hilburt and Ray Dussault for their assistance during the year.

Bob Cushman thanked Mark Densmore of Densmore Oil for their work over the years in keeping the membership records.

Rob Simmons reported on the status of the Endowment Fund being held and managed by the Community Foundation. The Fund has a current balance of $12,000. The Endowment Fund is intended to insure that the flags will continue to fly in perpetuity.
